Silver Star Metal Fabricating takes safety very seriously. This is our top priority. We always ensure that any product we sell is safe to operate. Other manufacturers put their profits before following health & safety standards. Over the years we have seen countless instances of mobile food service equipment that is dangerous to both the owner and the general public. As an owner it is important to follow all safety standards since your insurance policy may not cover you in the case of an accident where poor safety is found to be the root cause.

Since all of our mobile food products carry approvals from the TSSA and ESA, you can rest assured you are using a safe product that follows CAN/CSA-B149 codes as defined by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). We also ensure that our mobile food products are road safe. As a Transport Canada registered body & equipment builder we adhere to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) with respect to:

What is the TSSA?

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a private, independent, non-government, not-for-profit organization designated by the Ontario government as the authority having jurisdiction regarding the Technical Standards and Safety Act. It officially began operations on May 5, 1997 when the Technical Standards Division of the Ontario MCCR was divested from government. TSSA is a risk-based, prevention-oriented organization that provides services to the public, including education, training and certification, engineering design review, inspection, investigation, and prosecution.

TSSA regulates safety in areas affecting amusement devices; boilers and pressure vessels; elevating devices; natural gas, petroleum, propane fuels and equipment; operating engineers; and upholstered and stuffed articles.

What is the Technical Standards and Safety Act?

The Technical Standards and Safety Act was accepted into law in Ontario in 2001. The Act enhances public safety in Ontario by identifying the administrative powers of the authority having jurisdiction, by stating the basic rights, duties and responsibilities of persons governed by the Act, and by providing an efficient and flexible administration of technical standards with respect to amusement devices, boilers and pressure vessels, elevating devices, hydrocarbon fuels, operating engineers, and upholstered or stuff articles.

What does this have to do with my food truck?

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority on February 13, 2006 put into effect a director's order that states all newly manufactured MFSE (including, but not limited to: "Coffee Trucks", "Chip Wagons", "Hot Dog Carts", and "Hamburger Carts") are to be approved for its intended use.

An update to the above director's order has been issued on June 1, 2013. This can be found at the link below:

This director's order means that all newly manufactured mobile food service equipment must be "Field Approved" by the TSSA.

What is Field Approval?

The Field Approval process involves submitting documentation to the TSSA to obtain a safety approval sticker. The documentation requires includes: a complete certified equipment and components inventory, layout drawings, pipe diagrams, photos, warning labels, and fuel interlock. The process can take anywhere from 2-4 weeks and requires a certified Gas Technician 2 (G2) to submit the application for approval. This is a one-time approval of the mobile food service equipment by TSSA whereas the propane inspection is done yearly.

Silver Star Metal Fabricating is fully compliant with the TSSA with certified Gas Technicians on staff as well as a TSSA Contractor's License. We Field Approve all newly manufactured mobile food service equipment destined for the Ontario market.

Why do I need Field Approval?

It's the law. Any newly manufactured mobile food service equipment without Field Approval can be prevented from operating and removed from the property by a TSSA inspector. TSSA inspectors have the right to randomly inspect any mobile food service equipment in Ontario for compliance.

What does the Field Approval label from TSSA look like?

Below is a sample of the Field Approval label that should be affixed to the rating plate of the mobile food service equipment.

What is the purpose of a propane inspection?

A propane inspection must be performed by a certified Gas Technician 2 (G2). This inspection is done yearly to ensure the product is safe to operate. This involves an inspection of all gas related components and a pressure test to ensure there are no leaks. Silver Star Metal Fabricating is fully compliant with this law and provides this service to all new mobile food service equipment products.
